Title: Why your organization should reflect your students: Diversity and inclusion starts with you!

VIDEO: Modern Hero - Meet Patrice Banks
VIDEO: How I Plan on Disrupting the Auto Industry...in Red Heels

Employers are desperately looking to diversify their staff by actively hiring individuals from minority and underrepresented groups. Educators are the first step to ensure a diverse and inclusive workforce. How can you attract, support, and empower women and people of color in the trades fields to prepare the workforce of the future for the demands of today's business climate?

Girls Auto Clinic (GAC) is a woman-owned and operated business that caters to women. GAC offers automotive buying and repair resources, products, and services based on trust, education, inclusion, and empowerment.

Patrice Banks, founder of Girls Auto Clinic (GAC), is opening up the male-dominated automotive industry, bringing a fresh perspective to the status quo with her inspiring and energetic movement that inspires women, the #1 customer in the auto industry, to be #sheCANics, confident drivers, and smart consumers.
Banks, a self-described auto airhead® hated all of her automotive buying and repair experiences. Frustrated with the lack of resources educating women on car care and her inability to find a female mechanic in the Philadelphia area, Patrice enrolled in automotive technology school to learn how to work on cars. Her mission with Girl Auto Clinic was to create a place she wanted to bring her car for repair and maintenance. She has since made it her mission to educate and empower women through their cars!

By telling her story, she continues to make history, through engaging talks, interactive workshops, authoring an informative car care guide, and the successful running of a repair garage with female mechanics and a nail salon to get your nails done while you wait for your car!

Prior to establishing GAC, Patrice worked for more than 12 years as an engineer, manager, and leader at DuPont, a science and technology company. Patrice holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Engineering from Lehigh University and an Automotive Technology Diploma from Delaware Technical Community College. She is the author of the book, The Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide. See www.patricebanks.com

The Future is Female: Do Women Really Want to Work in the Trade Fields?
Many businesses agree, women’s work directly affects their bottom line for the better. There are more working women today than ever before in history. Still, male dominated fields like the trades struggle to attract and retain women employees, especially in positions of power. What’s behind the struggles of the lack of women in the trades and STEM? What can high school and college teachers do to increase the presence of women in these fields?

Patrice Banks is opening up the male-dominated automotive industry, bringing a fresh perspective to the status quo. By telling her story, she continues to make history, through engaging talks, interactive workshops, authoring an informative car care guide, and the successful running of Girls Auto Clinic.Passionate about equality and empowerment of women, business leadership, innovation, technology and STEM education, Patrice promotes positive messages for female inclusion and empowerment in the auto industry through her #sheCANic movement. Whether speaking to a room full of middle school girls, or national conferences with executives and CEO’s, Patrice inspires individuals, groups and businesses alike, to push boundaries, redefine success, and tap into their full potential.

Elm Creek Brewing Company Happy Hour (Post-conference informal hour)
Power down your day with Wade Carson, President/CEO of Elm Creek Brewing Company, as he hosts a post-conference, informal hour. Anyone can join. Relax and kick off your shoes or grab a beverage and join in.

An introductory message from Wade
I started my first business Carlson McCain, Inc., in 1997 and have successfully guided it now for 23 years. Carlson McCain is a civil engineering, land surveying and environmental consulting firm comprised of 65 people. In October 2019, my eldest son was looking for a career change and I decided to help him out by starting a new business. We discussed the idea of opening a microbrewery in Champlin as we knew the community was looking for one. We incorporated Elm Creek Brewing Company in November and started in on the federal, state and local permitting process.

During January, I wrote a detailed business plan which detailed our operations, marketing strategy and financial projections. In March, my wife Laura got involved with the acquisition of the former Ruby Tuesday's building. We did not realize that shortly thereafter that the Governor would order restaurants, bars and breweries to be closed. We spend the balance of March through May remodeling the building, installing brewery equipment, and starting brewing operations once all of the final permits were received. We opened our doors on June 12th, two days after the governor reopened bars and breweries. Since we opened, we added additional patio space and brewing equipment to keep up with demand, but also provide a safe place for patrons to enjoy a beer during the pandemic. Our claim to fame is that we are likely the only brewery in the State of Minnesota, if not the entire country, to open during the pandemic!

Join me to learn how we started our business, how it has been affected by the pandemic, and our plans for the future. Feel free to ask questions about the business or anything else you'd like to know about the microbrews. I'm interested in hearing from the education community too!
